Tour Second Life…
Here is the fastest and most powerful way for business people to come to grips with Second Life, the virtual world that is also a commercial platform.
You will learn the lingo, learn the protocols, ask questions as you go and find the places/experiences you need to know about.
Once you’ve done a tour you will be better placed to decide whether you want to do business in SL.
Building your own virtual conference facility
If after a tour you decide to use Second Life as a conference venue or meeting space, Conference Island is a good starting point.
Conference Island can deliver Skype, audio and video streaming into Second Life at a venue that will seriously impress your employees/customers.
Our parent operation, Inside This World Pty Ltd has a design and construction team for companies wishing to create their own space in Second Life. It also mentors companies that use projects in Second Life as a team-building exercise for employees.
Can my computer run Second Life?
Second Life needs a good graphics card, a decent computer and a fast broadband connection to run well. You may also need to configure your firewall.
Nothing a Help Desk can’t handle.
Here are the details:
- Second Life requires a cable or a DSL connection. The faster the better.
- Your graphics card will need to be at least an nVidia GeForce 2, GeForce 4mx, or an ATI Radeon 8500, 9250. But the more up to date and high powered your graphics card, the better your Second Life experience will be. Brands other than nVidia and ATI probably won’t work. If you are in doubt about your video card, check the Second Life System Specs.
- If you own a PC, you’ll need Windows XP (Service Pack 2) or Windows 2000 (Service Pack 4). The minimum processor is an 800MHz Pentium III or Athlon and you won’t go anywhere unless you have 256MB of RAM. The faster your processor and the more RAM the better.
- If you own a MAC, you’ll need Mac OSX 10.3.9 or better. You’ll need a processor speed of at least 1 GHz G4 and you’ll need 512MB. They’re the minima. More powerful = much better.
- Once you know your hardware is up to scratch, go to the Second Life web site and sign up for a free membership. Follow the prompts, download the program and try to start it up. If it doesn’t work …
Configure your firewall. Second Life needs to connect to ports 443/TCP, 12035/UDP, 12036/UDP, and 13000-13050/UDP. You should configure your firewall to allow outbound traffic on those ports, and related inbound traffic. If you don’t have a Help Desk, there’s more info here.
